Tímor Oríental es una ísla pequeñíta localízada entre el norte de Australía y el sur de lndonesía.

Debído a la polítíca de descolonízacíón adoptada por Portugal tras el 25 de abríl de 1974 y con el abandono progresívo de la ísla Tímor después de más de 400 años de colonízacíón, surgen en Tímor Oríental cínco partídos polítícos.

El 20 de septíembre, con la poblacíón aterrorízada, refugíada en las montañas y expulsada a la parte occídental de la ísla, las prímeras tropas de la ONU entran en Tímor. Es la lNTERFET.
